The people who influence me most are the ones I choose to be around. My friends.
They inspire me every day — with how they run their businesses, their homes, their families. With how they give back. With their kindness to causes and to the people around them. I get so much from these people.
My cousin Betsy is one of them. She does all of the above, but what I love most — and find myself asking for regularly — is her advice. It's just smart. She also happens to share that thinking with a much wider audience at @BetsyBurnhamDesign, where her design counsel is as good as anything you'll find.
I asked her recently about entertaining. Three things, she said.
Set a beautiful table — and set it properly — even if it's a buffet. Use all your best things.
The point is that the occasion is now. The people at your table tonight deserve your best things tonight.
Make a great playlist. Music invites the party magic.
Music is the thing that tells your guests they can relax, that this is going to be good. Don't leave it to shuffle.
Don't skimp on food and drink. Ever.
Generosity is the whole point. People remember how your home felt. Feed them well.
I couldn't agree more with any of it.
