Are maaterra plates compostable?

Yes. maaterra plates have been certified “composter approved” by the Compost Manufacturing Alliance, a leader in creating the most practical model for advancing the use of compostables and their acceptance into industrial compost facilities.
What does it mean when you say each plate is “unique”?

We see perfection in the uniqueness of each plate. Unlike other disposable plates which go through a process of breaking down the materials and manipulating them with dyes, glues, and finishes in order to form the plates, we opt for the purest, most sustainable processing. While we go through a rigorous process of choosing the cleanest, most consistently colored, minimally marked leaves, we also embrace the idea that no two leaves are created identical.

We see beauty in the uniqueness of each plates marking. Speckling, striping, and changes in texture may appear on a plate. We call the effect, “perfectly imperfect”.
How do you make your plates?

We harm no trees during our process because we harvest fallen leaves. We clean the leaves with water and UV light. We mold them with heat and pressure. We etch them instead of adding inks. And since they are 100% compostable, when you leave your table, you also leave no trace. maaterra plates are simply a leaf.

Sturdy, but noticeable leaf markings

The structural quality is definitely there—they don't bend or leak at all. However, a few plates had heavy dark streaks and prominent natural leaf markings across the eating surface that looked a little too pronounced for our taste.

I was surprised with how durable the plates were and they held up well at our barbecue. A couple of plates in the pack were slightly warped, but they worked well.

Beautiful natural variations

I love the simple, rustic feel of these plain plates. Each one has distinct dark veining and subtle texture marks from the palm leaves, which makes every setting look unique rather than mass-produced. Not for everyone but we really like it.

Sturdy and eco-friendly

Decent plates, slightly uneven surface

They do the job well for outdoor events, but some plates had slightly uneven surfaces or small cosmetic imperfections. Fine for casual casual dining, but maybe not for a formal event.

A lot of variance with the plate colors

Overall, these plates are good for backyard entertaining. The color patterns and markings in our pack varied quite a bit—some were light while others have darker spots, but we liked the character it added.
